Hypnosis
The hypnotic state is a modified state of consciousness, a form of partly conscious, receptive and integrated concentration that everyone is capable of achieving naturally.
7 questions to help you understand hypnosis
1
The difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis :
It is a modified state of consciousness accessible to everyone and is used for a variety of purposes: hypnosis for shows, cinema, advertising, science, etc.
Hypnotherapy :
As the name suggests, this is a hypnotic therapy. In other words, we work with this hypnotic state, which is accessible to everyone, for therapeutic purposes (stress management, treatment of phobias, addictions, headaches, mental programming, changing habits, etc.).
2
Can hypnosis be compared to sleep?
Of course not. It has been proven for a very long time that hypnosis is not a form of sleep, thanks to encephalograms (E.E.G.). Thanks to all the modern techniques of medical imaging investigation, we have been able to show that hypnosis is a state of altered consciousness between wakefulness and sleep, sometimes even beyond wakefulness. You can be in a state of hyper-arousal during the hypnotic state.
Hypnosis is not a state of sleep, unconsciousness or relaxation. On the contrary, like meditation, it is a state of intense alertness and over-focusing. Over-focussing enables brain functions that are normally inactive to be awakened through the action of memory and imagination. Under hypnosis, the brain travels on brain waves known as Theta waves (whereas wakefulness corresponds to Beta waves). These Theta waves are conducive to learning, creativity and problem-solving. Once access to our inner world has been facilitated, our imagination will enable us to transform old associations of ideas created by the subconscious.
3
How do we go about it?
First, we use an attention-focusing technique that suits the patient. Once this has worked, we help the patient with hypnotic communication. There is a whole hypnotic grammar that enables the patient to gradually move from a voluntary, conscious mode of functioning to a natural, spontaneous mode of functioning where the usual willpower is no longer used and where non-voluntary modes of functioning are discovered, such as the power of mental imagery on the body.
4
Are we conscious when we are in a state of hypnosis?
Yes, hypnosis is not sleep. In fact, it is a state of altered consciousness, of awake concentration, that everyone is capable of achieving naturally. In hypnosis, we develop a "parallel consciousness" to our waking consciousness. This enables the subject to relate to others, while at the same time becoming involved in other facets of their own life experience.
5
Do you remember a hypnosis session?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases, we remember everything: what happened during the hypnosis, what we thought, what the hypnotherapist said. Sometimes there are bits that you forget, just as you can forget part of a lecture even if you were aware of it from start to finish. Our brain is capable of not remembering everything. This can be more comfortable for the brain.
6
Do we retain control over our actions when we are in a state of hypnosis?
You are always aware of your actions because you are conscious in the hypnotic state. You know what is happening, what you are doing and what the therapist is doing or not doing. So you are aware of what you are doing. What is interesting, however, is to discover certain spontaneous phenomena such as automatic movements.
