Mental conditioning

What is it?

Mental conditioning is the process by which a person's thoughts, emotions and behaviour are influenced and shaped by internal or external factors.

This can happen consciously or unconsciously, and it can be the result of the environment in which a person has grown up, past experiences, cultural or social beliefs, and so on.

Mental conditioning can play an important role in the way a person perceives and interacts with the world.

The disadvantages of mental conditioning can include:

  • 1. Limitation of critical thinking : Mental conditioning can limit a person's ability to question their beliefs or examine different points of view, which can lead to closed-mindedness.
  • 2. Negative influence : Negative mental conditioning can lead to thoughts and behaviour that are destructive to oneself or to others.
  • 3. Dependence on others : A highly mentally conditioned person can be very dependent on the approval and validation of others, which can hinder personal development and self-confidence.
  • 4. Internal conflicts : Having contradictory beliefs as a result of mental conditioning can lead to internal conflicts and feelings of confusion.
  • 5. Reduced autonomy : Excessive mental conditioning can reduce a person's ability to make their own decisions and act autonomously.
  • 6. Lack of self-confidence and self-esteem : feeling inferior or devaluing yourself in the eyes of others, which can go as far as developing an inferiority complex
  • 7. Ignorance and lack of progress : it induces the person to remain in poverty and obedience. Believing that we must remain realistic and not dare to look beyond borders.

It is important to recognise these disadvantages so that we can work on personal development and on reinforcing freer, more independent thinking.

How do you get rid of them?

Breaking free from mental conditioning can be a difficult but achievable process. Here are a few steps to start breaking free:

1. Become aware of your beliefs and mental patterns: The first step is to become aware of the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that are the result of mental conditioning.

2. Question your beliefs : It is important to critically examine the beliefs we have internalised and ask ourselves whether they are really aligned with our values and personal goals.

3. Open your mind to new perspectives : Actively seek to explore different points of view, cultures and experiences to broaden your vision of the world and challenge preconceived ideas.

4. Practising mindfulness : Mindfulness can help you to recognise automatic mental patterns and develop greater mental clarity so that you can make conscious choices rather than reacting automatically, thereby developing free will.

5. Get professional help : Sometimes, it can be beneficial to consult a therapist or personal coach to get support in this process of mental deconditioning. This allows you to be accompanied, to have methods that have proved their worth, to save time and to invest in the best thing, which is yourself.

By practising these steps regularly and remaining patient with yourself, you can gradually :

  • free yourself from mental conditioning
  • cultivate freer, more authentic thinking
  • be aligned with who we really are
